Our Love Story

To be honest, I’ve never been a big fan of Valentine’s Day. That is, I was never a fan before I met D. Now I love it! Although we should be proclaiming our love all year long, with our busy schedules sometimes it’s hard for us to forget everything and celebrate the love we have for each other. So I love having a day to focus on our relationship.

I’ve been thinking a lot about our relationship the last few weeks as I’ve been preparing for V-Day. I thought it would be a good time to share our love story with you.

We met in September 2009 on a blind date. We were introduced by one of my favorite college roommates, M, and D’s best friend from high school, N, who were dating at the time. If this were a fairy tale, I would tell you that it was love at first sight. I would tell you that as soon as I saw him, he swept me off my feet and we were engaged the next day. But, this isn’t a fairy tale. And it was not love at first sight, at least not for me. D says that he liked me from the start. But I took some convincing. Don’t get me wrong, he was a very nice guy. I wanted to be friends, but nothing more. I had just moved to the city and I wanted to make friends and date lots of guys. I wasn’t interested in being in a relationship at the time.

But D was persistent. A few days after the blind date, he called me asking me out for a second. I didn’t have the heart to say no. So I went. That date turned into a third date into a fourth date and within a month, we were dating.

We dated for only four months. D knew very quickly that he wanted to marry me. But once again, I took a little more time. Getting married was a very difficult decision for me. I wanted to get married but I was scared to at the same time. In January 2010, I made the decision to take the plunge. We became unofficially engaged. The next day, I broke it off, needing more time to figure out where I wanted the relationship to go.

After going back and forth between getting married or not, after lots of prayer and advice from close friends and family, we got engaged again a month later… on Valentine’s Day.

(Our first V-day together 2-14-10)

After only a two month engagement, we were married in April.  I am so grateful for D’s persistence.  If it weren’t for him, we wouldn’t be married.  Now, after almost two years of marriage, our relationship keeps getting better and better.  We may not be in a fairytale but this is even better!

Happy Valentine’s Day tomorrow!
